Full Definition
The named insured is the entity or individual listed on the policy declarations page who purchased the policy and has full rights under it (including the right to cancel, receive return premium, and modify coverage). Additional insureds are third parties added to the policy — typically by endorsement — who receive liability coverage for claims arising out of the named insured's operations. For example, a landlord may require a tenant to add them as an additional insured on the tenant's GL policy. Additional insured status provides defense and indemnity coverage but does not give the additional insured control over the policy.
