Kidnap & Ransom Insurance Guide

K&R insurance covers ransom payments, crisis response costs, and related expenses for kidnapping, extortion, and wrongful detention events.

What It Is

Kidnap & Ransom insurance provides coverage for ransom payments, crisis management expenses, and related costs arising from kidnapping, extortion, wrongful detention, and hijacking events. Coverage includes ransom payments, fees for professional crisis response consultants and negotiators, medical and psychiatric care for victims, lost income and personal financial loss, travel and accommodation expenses, and legal liability. K&R policies are typically non-disclosed — meaning their existence is kept confidential to avoid incentivizing criminal activity.

Who Needs It

Companies with employees who travel to or work in high-risk regions (Latin America, West Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia). This includes oil and gas companies, mining operations, construction firms operating internationally, NGOs and nonprofits working in developing countries, media organizations with foreign correspondents, and UHNW individuals and families with high public profiles. Companies with executives who are public figures or known to be wealthy face elevated risk.

How It Works

K&R policies are activated when a covered event occurs. The insurer deploys a crisis response team — typically including a crisis management consultant, negotiator, medical support, and legal counsel — within hours. The response team manages the situation, provides family support, and coordinates with law enforcement. Ransom payments, if made, are reimbursed by the policy. All K&R policies include pre-incident consulting services including travel risk assessments and crisis management planning.

Limits & Deductibles

K&R limits typically range from $1M to $25M per event. Aggregate limits may apply. There are usually no deductibles — the full limit is available from the first dollar. Premium is based on the number of covered individuals, territories of operation, industry, and risk profile. Annual premiums for a mid-market company with 50 travelers typically range from $5K to $25K for $5M-$10M in coverage. Policies are confidential and should not be disclosed to covered individuals.

Claims Example

An executive of a construction company was kidnapped while traveling to a project site in a high-risk country. The K&R policy immediately deployed a crisis response team including a professional negotiator and family liaison. After 9 days, the executive was released safely. The policy covered a negotiated ransom payment, $180K in crisis response consultant fees, $45K in travel and security costs, and $30K in post-incident psychiatric care for the executive and family.
